The Historical Society sponsors dozens of fun and educational events each year. Below are some upcoming events and past events.

      

UPCOMING EVENTS

OCTOBER

Halloween at the Glenwood Cemetery
Sunday October 31, 2004, noon - 2pm

Each year, "residents" of the cemetery rise from their graves and tell their stories of happiness, sorrow and unusual death. Proceeds from this popular annual event fund the maintenance of the Glenwood Cemetery. Here are pictures from past years.

NOVEMBER

Annual Dungeon Party in the Park City Museum
Friday November 12, 2004, 5:30pm to 7:30pm

Hors d'oeuvres and drinks are served in the historic Territorial Jail, located in the Museum's basement. Holding Park City's criminal element since 1885,Ý the jail aptly earned the name "Dungeon." Here are pictures from the previous parties. (Members only, memberships available at the door)

DECEMBER

Holiday Outing to Kearns Mansion and Masonic Temple
Thursday, December 16 - 11:30 am

Thursday, December 16 the membership is invited to join us for two great tours. First to the Salt Lake City Masonic Temple on South Temple, then across the street to see the the Kearns Mansion, now the Governor's Mansion.

The Salt Lake City Masonic Temple was erected in 16 months through donations, including those from Park City Masons, and dedicated in 1927. The Kearns Mansion, home of Thomas Kearns the owner of the Silver King Mine and one of Park City's notable millionaires, will be decorated for Christmas.

Meet at 11:30 a.m. at Wasatch Bagels to carpool to Salt Lake City. Tour of the Masonic Temple begins at 12:15pm and the tour of the Kearn's Mansion at 2:00pm, returning to Park City by 4:00 p.m.

  • Summer 2004: Hike Through History with Hal.As in years past, Park City Research Historian Hal Compton will lead hikes through the surrounding mountains to historic mines, railway grades and miners' shacks. (Members only. Reservations required - please phone for reservations).

    - Saturday, July 17:: Jupiter Mine, Silver King Consolidated Mine, Crescent Tramway


    - Sunday, August 15: Little Bell, Quincy & Daly West Mines, Lady Morgan Lake

    - Saturday, September 11: Flagstaff, Naildriver & New York Bonanza Mines

  • Main Street Walking Tours
    11am Monday-Friday (Memorial Day to September 10)
    Experience Park City’s colorful past on a leisurely walk down Main Street. Explore the more than 25 saloons where miners relaxed. Discover how Park City recovered from the disastrous fire of 1898. Encounter local characters like the outrageously rich “Silver Queen” or the hungry miner Paddy “the Pig.” Enjoy learning about the people who worked, played and lived in Park City.


  • Katherine Henney relates a sad Park City taleHalloween at the Glenwood.This popular annual event has the dual purpose of raising funds for the maintenance of the Glenwood Cemetery in Park City and preserving Park City history. Each year, "residents" of the cemetery stand by their graves and tell their stories of happiness, sorrow and death.Here are pictures from past years.

  • Annual Dungeon Party.Held at the Park City Museum (which features the original territorial 1885 jail sometimes referred to as "the dungeon"), new exhibits are unveiled at this traditionally colorful event. Here are pictures from the previous parties. (Members only.)

  • Hal's Hikes Through History. Each summer, Research Historian Hal Compton leads hikes to historic sites in the surrounding mountains. Here are pictures from past hikes. (Members only).
  • Historic Home Tour.2000 home tour participants at post-tour reception at Grappa.Each year, local residents open the doors of their historic homes for viewing by participants. The self-guided tour is followed by a wonderful post-tour party with gourmet food and wine.Here are pictures from past tours. 

  • Brown-Bag Series: History in the Dungeon.

 Standing room only groups gathered for our first series of Brown Bag Lunch Lectures in the Dungeon. Floralie Millsaps and Judge James Don (Hal Compton) held the attention of history buffs gathered for each lunch lecture.
