1 At the mine there is a boarding house for single
miners. Married miners lived in town with their
families. Where does your miner live? Draw where
he lives.
|
8. Sometimes when a large amount of ore is
removed, it leaves a large cavern. The miners
construct a framework of wood squares called
stoping, to support the rock. Find the stope
and color the timbers.
|
2. Before going underground, miners change
their clothes in a special room at the mine. Draw
a line showing the path the miner would take from
home to the mine.
|
9. Because the Ontario Mine is wet, cool, and
damp, the miners welcome a warm place to eat
lunch and take a break. Find the doghouse and
color it. Why do you think it's called a
doghouse?
|
3. Equipment, ore and workers are transported
underground in a type of elevator called a cage.
Find the cage and color it.
|
10. If a miner is drilling holes for dynamite to blast
more rock away, where would he be? Color him in.
|
4. The cage travels up and down the shaft.
Choose another color and fill in the shaft.
|
11. The worker who shovels ore into the mine car is
called a mucker. How does the ore get out of the
mine? Draw a dotted line form the car to the surface.
|
5. The ore body contains the richest minerals. In
Park City the valuable minerals are silver, lead and
zinc. Color the ore body in light gray or silver.
|
12. Sometimes miners dig sideways into the hill looking
for ore. The opening is called an adit. How many
can you see?
|
6. The mine crews dug passages to the ore body
in order to remove it. These passages are called
drifts. Color in the passage which "drifts" along
toward the ore body.
|
13. With a light colored crayon, highlight all the new
words that you have learned. Tell your partner or
group what each one means.
|
7. One of the biggest problems in the mine was water.
It filled in the shafts and drifts and made it impossible
to work. The Ontario tunnel was dug to let the water
drain to the outside. Find and color in the drain tunnel.
