Locals best remember this building from the late 1940s when George Butler raised parakeets and canaries here. The birds took over the entire interior so George never lived here. He managed the Utah Power & Light Company at 508 Main Street (now Phoenix Gallery) and lived in the company’s apartment upstairs.

This building reflects the trend in early twentieth century architecture toward more precise and angular forms that highlighted horizontality. The design’s sparseness was emphasized through reserved ornamentation and the use of masonry. James “Jimmie Byrne” built this small structure in the mid-1920s.
