John Francis Cunningham was only four years old when came to Park City from New York with his parents in 1887. As a young man he began working for the Ascheim Mercantile Company, the first major retail enterprise in Park City. He continued with the firm for 32 years until it changed hands and became Blyth-Fargo. John continued as head of the hardware department until the Blyth-Fargo burned to the ground in 1927. John and his sons George and Robert then opened their own hardware business, which he operated until retiring in 1936. John died two years later while still living in this house. The Cunningham family continued to own this home until 1962.

John built the home in 1901 on this site that had previously been occupied with a home owned by blacksmith and volunteer fireman James Berry. That house was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1898 and this home was part of the rapid post-fire rebuilding of the town. Pyramid houses became the most popular house type built around 1900. The transoms containing leaded and stain glass, above the broad single pane windows, are original. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
